June 1983----”Just Black & White”, one woman show, Willoughby Wallace Memorial Library, Stony Creek, CT
reviewed June 12, 1983 New Haven Register, by Shirley Gonzales, art critic
article titled “Realism Touches the Willow”

“There is an excellent display of pencil drawings by Gretchen Dugan Munroe at the Willoughby Wallace Memorial Library in Stony Creek.  Dugan works in a style of realism which is close to photographic, using only black and white.  Strong contrasts and sharp focus characterize these lifes, and either full landscapes or fragments of natural growth.  One of a willow branch, is one in style resembling illustrations the extent of being labeled “Willow” in block letters like a book plate.  Dugan's work exhibits precise perception and execution, but never becomes either static, or sterile reproduction....”

“More than one of the black and white pieces in the exhibition displays fine draftsmanship.....Not all of these black and white pieces are in one room. But they are consistently the best in show---Gretchen Dugan Munroe's exquisite pencils drawing of a geranium....”
